Content Ideas for Business Websites

Coming up with content ideas for business websites can be difficult, especially if your company sells physical products.

After the change in Google’s algorithm original content has become more important in ranking factors, so businesses need fresh, original content for their websites.

There is a video at the end of this article that talks more about creating content and SEO.

There are many ways for you to come up with content which I could talk about, but why not create content that will please customers and search engines at the same time?

What I mean by that is that you can create original content by focusing on what customers really need from your website. And then optimizing that content with your keywords. For example:

A recent study by Marketing Automation Software Guide revealed that customers preferred viewing pricing information over blog articles about the products.

On a scale of 1-5 from least important to most important, people preferred pricing information at 4.6 over a blog post about the product at 2.6.

This tells us that a business can create new content based on pricing information.

What is content exactly?

Content is any information on your website that is read, seen, or heard by a visitor to the website. Content can be:

  • Videos
  • Webinars
  • Tutorials
  • Testimonials
  • PDF documents
  • Images and graphics, headers and footers
  • Product descriptions and prices

Content is important to a successful business website because you want to appear to be professional, to stand above the crowd of other websites that have the bare minimum.

Content is also important to search engines as new content tells the search engine that your website is growing and it will come back more often to index the new pages.

This gives you an opportunity to include keyword rich text on the new pages. Also the more content you have on your site the more opportunities you have for people to link to your website.

For example, if you have the operating manual for the xyz gadget that you sell, someone may link to that page on your website as a reference for their customers.

Other Business Websites Content Ideas

In this article I will write about:

  • How and why content is important
  • Some of the different types of visitors to your website
  • Creating content based on your users
  • A few tips for adding content

People visit your website with different goals. Some visitors want to research the products and others are ready to buy the products.

As website owners we should ask ourselves if we have the content necessary for the different kinds of people that visit the website.

Is the content on your website useful for the people who currently visit your site on a regular basis, and for customers that have already made a purchase?

What kind of content is right for your business website?

There are three kinds of people that you should create content for.

Create content for people who want to research the products you sell, for people who want to buy the products and for your current customers.

Creating content for the people who come to your site just to research a product or research the company can consist of:

  • Creating a FAQ page
  • Creating a products comparisons page
  • Creating video demos of products
  • Creating white papers with industry statistics
  • eBooks with other useful information

Creating content for researchers helps to keep them engaged with your website and ultimately buy your product.

Researchers are more interested in learning more about a product as opposed to buying the product. So having content for them to study will make your website appear to be a trusted authority on your product.

Creating content for purchasers on your business websites

Having content for purchasers can help make the buying decision process for them a little easier.

The customers already know that they need to make a purchase, the decision they’re trying to make when coming to your site is whether or not to make the purchase from your company.

Content for purchasers can include:

  • Contact information on your site
  • About us information
  • Cast studies
  • Deals and promotions
  • Free trials or demos

Contact information should be included on each page of your website. Many business websites have the contact information on the header.

Also include different ways that the customer can contact your business.

Include an email address, a phone number, a street address, a form for them to fill out. Make it as easy as possible for prospects to contact your business to get information.

Content for the About Us page of your website

Content on your About Us page can include pictures and bios of employees, company picnic pictures and videos and employee of the month write ups.

The About Us page is also a great place to restate the guarantee of your products and include testimonials and links to the other pages on your website.

It can help the purchaser feel more comfortable about buying from you if they can see pictures of the people they’ll need to call to follow up after the purchase if it becomes necessary.

Creating a Deals and Promotions Page as Content

Creating a special deals and promotions page on your website can be the last push that a purchaser needs in order to make the purchasing decision.

It also helps with the overall content development of the business website because you can include keywords and restate product benefits.

Create content for the current customers that visit your website. That can consist of creating online demos, support or repair and maintenance information.

You can create content that helps people by giving them what they need and help your website by giving you the opportunity to create keyword rich content on other pages of the website.

Ramiro, great article! I think you provide some excellent advice for websites that are working toward optimizing their content. Another recommendation I would make is to find a way to measure that content. When you spend all that time and those resources on creating quality content, you want to see how viewers are responding to it. Google analytics has some handy tools for measuring time on site, click-throughs and other metrics. Additionally, you could go for a CRM or marketing automation tool that can track that as well. By monitoring how your visitors respond to your content, you can make sure that you have the best content on your site.
